BelarusBelarus - Third BCH III Workshop in Belarus
The Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus in collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus organized the Third BCH Workshop on the Use of BCH Information and BCH Capacity - building Sustainability Beyond Project’s Duration in the context of the UN Environment - GEF Project for Sustainable Capacity Building for Effective Participation in the Biosafety Clearing House (BCH III). During the two-days workshop from 18 to 19 March 2019 in Minsk, Belarus it was demonstrated how the BCH information and BCH know-how on living modified organisms, data on risk assessment of LMOs, national records, reference records, libraries of scientific data and methodological literature, BCH training materials, virtual learning environment (VLE), and other sources of information presented on BCH can be utilized by national educational institutions including schools and universities and other stakeholders. The workshop included theoretical training and practical training in groups to cover and train all key target groups and potential BCH users.
The workshop was attended by 35 participants. 27 participants represent students, teachers from universities, graduate schools, schools from 5 Belarusian districts: Minsk, Mogilev, Grodno, Vitebsk, Gomel and Braslav region. The opening remarks were given by Mr. Mikalai Svidzinski, CBD and CPB National Focal Point and Ms. Elena Guzenko, Deputy Head on Science and Innovations of the Institute of Genetics and Cytology, NAS of Belarus. An introductory presentation on the implementation of the Cartagena Protocol in the Republic of Belarus was provided by Ms.Tatiana Zheleznova, consultant of Biodiversity Division, Biological and Landscape Diversity Department of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus. The workshop was facilitated by Galina Mozgova, BCH NFP and colleagues from the National Coordination Biosafety Centre of the Institute of Genetics and Cytology. All workshop materials will be available on the website of the National Coordination Biosafety Centre at the link http://www.biosafety.by/ as well as in the Virtual Learning Environment. The Institute of Genetics and Cytology expresses deep gratitude to the UNEP and GEF for assistance in the implementation of the Project and to Dr. Ernesto Ocampo Edye, Biosafety Clearing House Specialist for providing technical support on VLE.
