The Tanzania BCH III First National Workshop si scheduled for 10-11 March 2019. The National Biotechnology Authority in collaboration with the UN-Environment organized the Second BCH Workshop on the Use of BCH Information and BCH Capacity - building n in the context of the UN Environment - GEF Project for Sustainable Capacity Building for Effective Participation in the Biosafety Clearing House (BCH III).
Welcoming notes were given by Professor Florence Mtambanengwe, the Board Chairperson for the NBA. The workshop was officially opened by the Professor Fanuel Tagwira, the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education Science and Technology Development. The government of Zimbabwe gave its support to the prestigious the workshop as it provided important information for government decisions on the application of Living Modified Organisms.
The two-days workshop from 2 to 3 April 2019 was conducted in HPC, University of Zimbabwe, Harare, Zimbabwe. The workshop was attended by 20 participants from different governmental institutions and aimed to:
a) Define procedure or mechanisms to flow information onto the BCH
b) Enhance the national Capacity to use the BCH Central Portal to find and register information
The 5th Meeting of the Informal Consultative Committee of the Asia Biosafety Clearing House Family (ICC-ABF) was held on 25-27 March 2019 in Luang Prabang Province, Lao PDR. Jointly organized by Ministry of Science and Technology, Lao PDR and Korea Biosafety Clearing House, Korea.
The participants from 7 countries of the region namely Cambodia, India, Korea, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Mongolia and Philippine, and 1 agency as UNEP participated in the meeting.
The main objective of the meeting is to updates and review on the status of the Asia BCH Roadmap, the way forward of the Asia BCH Family and the finalization of the post 2020 regional project proposal.
The Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus in collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus organized the Third BCH Workshop on the Use of BCH Information and BCH Capacity - building Sustainability Beyond Project’s Duration in the context of the UN Environment - GEF Project for Sustainable Capacity Building for Effective Participation in the Biosafety Clearing House (BCH III). During the two-days workshop from 18 to 19 March 2019 in Minsk, Belarus it was demonstrated how the BCH information and BCH know-how on living modified organisms, data on risk assessment of LMOs, national records, reference records, libraries of scientific data and methodological literature, BCH training materials, virtual learning environment (VLE), and other sources of information presented on BCH can be utilized by national educational institutions including schools and universities and other stakeholders. Malawi conducted the first BCH training for biosafety stakeholders from 13th to 14th February 2019 at Golden Peacock Hotel in Lilongwe. The training drew its participants from research institutions, private sectors, Civil society, Government Departments, the Media, seed companies and food and processing industries. A total of 30 people attended the training of which eight were women.
The opening remarks were delivered on behalf of the Director of Environment Mrs Tawonga Mbale-Luka, by Dr. Lilian Chimphepo who welcomed all participants and urged then to participate actively during the training. In her remarks Chimphepo reminded the participants on when Malawi became party to the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety including modalities that have been put in place to facilitate implementation of the Protocol.
The training was facilitated by Dr Ossama Abdelkawy, BCH Project Regional Specialist. The training was aimed at equiping biosafety stakeholders with knowledge on the roles of the Competent National Athorities and National Focal Points, defining procedure or mechanisms on flow of information on the BCH and enhancing capcity in using the BCH Central Portal in finding and registering information.

National Center for Biotechnology - (has been assigned as Focal Point for the clearing-house mechanism on biosafety) organized the First National BCH Workshop in the context of the UN Environment – GEF Project for Sustainable Capacity Building for Effective Participation in the Biosafety Clearing House (BCH III), from 12-13 December 2018, Astana, Kazakhstan.
The purpose of workshop was to set up procedures and mechanisms needed to achieve sustainability of an effective participation to the BCH; and establish national procedures and operational linkages to gather information to be placed on the BCH in line with national biosafety policy and biosafety framework;
Workshop participants included representatives from different stakeholder from government and non-government sectors.
During the Workshop participants were acquainted with technical national BCH responsibilities, methods of finding information and the procedures for registering and publishing biosafety related decisions.
Workshop was facilitated by Alexey Tarasjev, UNEP GEF BCH III Regional Advisor.
